Quirky Heroines, Happy Endings

Halloween Costumes that Murder Childhood

I let my children dress up.  That’s it.  I’m beyond the stage where I’m going to put on a purchased costume and parade around.  As a woman of a certain age, I know when its time to give the children the spotlight and fade into the background. However, as a woman of a certain age, I’ve lived long enough (thank the good Lord) to witness the diabolical attempt at destroying my childhood with devious sexiness.  Note the following horrible sexy costumes that shouldn’t be.

There will be no commentary.  Just scroll down, seeing your childhood go down in flames while your eyes melt down your face a la the Nazis at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Yay!  I wrecked your childhood too!

Blogtoberfest – Funny Halloween Movies

Oh, you sneaky Blogtoberfest, you almost got me, didn’t you?  Clever girl.  But I am not going to make the same mistake I did a few nights ago and scare myself

so much I’m sitting up and jumping and shadows.  No.  Today’s blog post is about the fun and/or campy Halloween movies.  Unfortunately, there is an evil clown in one of them, but it’s balanced by a gangsta Woody Harrelson.

Which brings me to my first move, Zombieland.  Zombies scare me but I watch ’em anyway.  It’s something about the apocalyptic, nomad type existence that happens after such devastation that I enjoy.  I like Zombieland because the lead guy isn’t a big ol’ tough zombie-killing hero, no sir.  He’s a scared little beta dude, running for his life.  “Double-Tap” indeed.  A fun film to watch with excellent zombie-killing sequences that make you think “I could do that”.  Let me tell you, I probably couldn’t.

Rick Moranis,  the mousy florist who hits it big with a “Mean Green Mother from Outer Space”, a plant that brings him fame and fortune but demands a lot more in return.  I’ve seen the 1960 version with Jack Nicholson but I do prefer the musical version with Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Jim Belushi as well as Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell as two of the three girl singers.

Son, be a dentist….you have a talent for causing things pain.

Ghostbusters:

Three words: StayPuft Marshmallow Man.  I laughed so hard when I first saw the StayPuft man walking through New York, like a sweet, but angry albino King Kong, that my stomach muscles hurt the next day. The whole movie is such fun. Annie Potts and Rick Moranis are both cute and hilarious as a quirky couple.

What are your favorite “fun” Halloween movies?

Five Halloween Books for Scarilicious Reading

Yes, we like the movies, but there’s nothing like a scary book to curl up with on a dark, blustery night.  When I lived alone, I used to scare myself to death with the sounds that I thought I heard when I was reading an especially scary book.  And the dog didn’t help when she jump up and ran out of the room for no apparent reason. (Sometimes I think dogs do that on purpose to  scare the mess out of us.  Then they go drink out of the toilet and laugh at us.)

Anyhoo, here’s my top five books to read around Halloween, or any time.  These are presented in no particular order.

Pet Sematary  – Stephen King:  I can’t tell you how much this book frightened me.  I discuss this in more detail over at my blog, if you care to take a look.  Suffice to say, while the movie is pretty scary, it could not come close to the frightening visions that I had conjured in my head when I’d read the book..

I Am Legend – Richard Matheson:  Forget Will Smith.  Forget the movies.  Read the story.  Get inside of the head of the last human on earth, who is plagued every night by some kind of creatures who bid him to “come out, come out…”  This novel inspired George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead.  Excellent reading.

Something Wicked This Way Comes – Ray Bradbury: Jim Nightshade and William Halloway encounter a carnival that is not exactly what it seems.  To me, some of the themes that run through this novel mirror Stephen King’s  Needful Things.  If you haven’t read either, read Something Wicked first.

The Haunting of Hill House – Shirley Jackson: I saw the movie, yes, it was scary.  However, as I wrote before, there’s nothing that can scare you worse than yourself.  Shirley Jackson taps right into that terror and carries you along with her.

Rosemary’s Baby – Ira Levin: First of all, stay away from the “sequel”, Son of Rosemary’s Baby.  That book made me so angry that I threw the hardcover across the room.  Literally.  (I am very glad that I hadn’t been reading it on an e-reader because the urge to throw it would have still been very strong.).  The original Rosemary’s Baby is another case of the ordinary turning so hideously extraordinary that you can’t believe it’s happening.  Certainly, it may be somewhat dated, but still, transport yourself back to the era before the Internet and immerse yourself in the horror.

I hope you enjoy these hand-picked scary selections of mine. Be sure to lock the doors and the windows and leave the bathroom light on.  You don’t want to fumble into someone in the middle of the night.
Pleasant dreams!

Halloween Recipe – Roasted Vegetable Quesadillas

Roasted Vegetable Quesadillas RecipeEasy-Peasy, guys and dolls.  These tasty roasted vegetable quesadillas are a great finger food for your Halloween gathering.  I know, there’s no meat in them, but trust me, they’re good…and I am a gal who can sink her teeth in a steak.

Do NOT use canned corn. It will give your dish a weird, canned taste.  Take it from me.

Prep: 15 min. Bake: 20 min.  12 Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium zucchini, chopped
  • 1 medium sweet red pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup frozen corn, thawed
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 4 tomato flour tortillas (10 inches)
  • 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Mexican cheese blend
  • Guacamole, sour cream, salsa and sliced ripe olives, optional

Directions

  • In a large bowl, combine the vegetables, oil and cumin; toss to coat. Arrange in a single layer in an ungreased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 425° for 10-15 minutes or until tender. Reduce heat to 350°.
  • Divide vegetable mixture evenly between two tortillas. Sprinkle with cheese. Top with remaining tortillas. Place on an ungreased baking sheet; bake for 8-10 minutes or until cheese is melted.
  • Cut each quesadilla into six wedges. Garnish with guacamole, sour cream, salsa and olives if desired.

Halloween Music – The Classical Edition

Ah, it’s getting closer, isn’t it? My little ones’ costumes have arrived (via UPS, dahlings…Dahlia despises retail shopping and who would give up a chance to see the kinda hot UPS man dropping off a package?) and the candy corn is in the house. A chill is in the air and Blogtoberfest continues. Y’all still with me, I hope, because this is testing me to the limits. Blogging every day? Yikes! But it’s been 13 days and so far so good.

I’ve got on my big headphones today, you know the ones, and I’m sending you some intellectually spooky tunes to create the perfect background for you and your Halloween celebrations. Whether it’s playing in the background or you are actively listening, these pieces are sure to raise the hair on the back of your neck.

Shall we begin?

Franz Liszt: Fantasy and Fugue on “B-A-C-H”…..no not that Bach:

In music, the BACH motif is the motif, a succession of notes important or characteristic to a piece, B flat, A, C, B natural. In German musical nomenclature, in which the note B natural is written as H and the B flat as B, it forms Johann Sebastian Bach‘s family name. (from Wikipedia)

GYÖRGY LIGETI – Volumina –  Pieces of his music were used in the film 2001:  A Space Odyssey.

This such a classic, I couldn’t ignore it:

Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor

Another classic –

Mussorsky – Night on Bald Mountain

Last, but not least, one of my favorites…the trilling flutes, the ominous lower reeds and the muted brass give you the chill you desire…and don’t forget all those creepy broomsticks.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (HD)

Boo!
