Wild West Heroes – We Need More Diverse Books

Federal Marshal Bass Reeves

Please note – the #weneedmorediversebooks is not a condemnation of the books that are out now – it’s simply an observation that we need more of a good thing.

The #weneedmorediversebooks campaign caught my eye this past week.  As a former teacher, a parent and a writer, I try to write diverse, non-typical characters.  When I was in the classroom, I made it a point to collect books that spoke about many different cultures.

One of my son’s first chapter books when he was in third grade was called “Justin and the Best Biscuits in the World.”  It was a story about a boy whose father had passed away and lived in a household of females.  He believed cleaning and cooking was “woman’s work.”  In all, the poor child was suffering from a lack of a male in the house.  His smart mother sent him to live for the summer with her father who owned a ranch.  Not only did Justin become exposed to black cowboys and rodeo games, but he also learned that cooking and cleaning weren’t just for women.

When I finished the book with my son, he said it had to be fiction because….there were no black cowboys.  As a teacher, I was stunned, and as a parent, I knew it was time to get down to the nitty gritty.  Thus began the research.  I knew, of course, that there were black cowboys (loosely translated as people in the “wild west”) , but had neglected to pass this knowledge down to my son.

Let’s begin, shall we?

Buffalo Soldiers, Black Cowboys of Texas, Nat Love, Bill Pickett, George Glenn, Moses Speese and Mary Fields (technically not a cow BOY, but needs to be included on this list.) Run a search on any of those names and you’ll get an eyeful.

And let’s take a look at the Lone Ranger. Where did he come from?

Bass Reeves was a former slave who became a Federal Marshal.  Throughout his thirty-two year career, he brought over three thousand (3,000) criminals to justice.  Oh, Dahlia, you might say, this has nothing to do with the Lone Ranger!  Hold on a second and hear me out.  Art Burton, the author of “Black Gun, Silver Star:  The life and Legend of Frontier Marshal Bass Reeves” points out Marshall Reeves rode a gray (silver) horse, made use of American Indian trackers, and gave people a silver dollar so that they would remember him.  The Lone Ranger gave out silver bullets.

Sometimes appearing as a cowboy, farmer, gunslinger, or outlaw, himself, he always wore two Colt pistols, butt forward for a fast draw. Ambidextrous, he rarely missed his mark.

An  article from the Fort Smith Elevator from August 11, 1882:

Deputy Marshal Bass Reeves came in on Monday with sixteen prisoners as follows: W. S. Smith, violating revenue law – on bond; Austin Laflore, Jake Gardener, Charles Holmes, larceny; Dick Randolph, Thos. McGiesey, G. W. Brashears, Russell Rowland, introducing liquor in the Territory: Chas. McNally, Boss Kemp, Chas. Carter, N. R. Rozell, W. H. Wynne, assault with intent to kill: W. F. Skeggs, Richard Robinson, arson.

Sixteen prisoners?  If that isn’t bad-ass, then I don’t know what badass is.

As “the greatest lawman of the Wild West Era” Marshal Reeves is a romance hero just waiting to happen!

Hot n Sprung Blog Hop – Hot Summer Reads

Usually the spring/summer season is when most television shows go in hiatus and we’re left to our own devices to entertain ourselves. Yeah, we could catch up on all the movies we refused to pay real money for last summer or try to get involved in a new series on Netflix or Hulu.

Don’t do that though. Stick with your fall/winter shows and use the better weather and lovely sunshine to stick your nose in a few great reads. There are so many great romance novels out there that by the time you get from under your to be read (TBR) pile, it’ll be fall. (And you’ll have a great tan.)

I like zombies.  They scare the crap out of me, but I like ’em anyway.  When I started watching The Walking Dead, then reading the graphic novel (highly recommended if you’re a fan of the show), I realized that I had a lot of questions.  For example, when Rick is rescued by Morgan Jones, what happens to Morgan (and his son) after Rick leaves?  Were there any other survivors, hiding out in their homes, looking for rescue?

What are their stories?

And that’s how Loving Among the Dead started, with a “what if”?  What if a woman, sheltered constantly by her parents, the “good girl”, was suddenly thrust into the middle of a zombie apocalypse? Even though she is nearing thirty, an age where most people are making their own way in the world, her only security is getting home to her parents.  But when she gets there, they’re dead.  And she has to bury them.

What does she do now?  Find out in Loving Among the Dead, my newest and first release with Loose Id.

You can win a copy, along with some other cool prizes and CASH!

Are Romance Novels Literary Peppers?

I watch a lot of Food Network, courtesy of my  wonderful husband,  and I’ve learned that there were heat ratings for peppers.  It’s called the Scoville scale, named after Wilbur Scoville, who worked for the Park-Davis Company.  It is what is called “subjective dilution-taste procedure”. I’m not going into the whole science of it, but since this is not a foodie post, I’ll dispense with that.

Basically, the heat factor of chile peppers is measuresd in multiples of 100 units.  A sweet, green bell pepper is at zero Scoville units.  The hot as Hades and beyond Naga Jolokia Ghost Pepper is measures at 1,000,000 Scoville units.  Talk about extremes.

To put this in a bit of perspective, Frank’s RedHot Original is 450 Scoville Units.  Tabasco Sauce (regular) is 700 Scoville Units.   Frank’s RedHot XTRA Hot is 2,000 Scoville units.  I don’t mess with anything more than that.  However, there are sauces available for purchase that are measured at 16,000,000 units on the Scoville scale.  Blair’s 16 Million Reserve.

That’s hot,right?

Sooooo, let’s take a look at romance books.  Many sites have heat ratings according to the type of sex happening, the frequency of the sex and , I assume, the type of words used.

You have your sweet romances, your sensual romances and your erotic romances.

Here is an example of a Sensuality Rating Guide from All About Romance:

http://likesbooks.com/kissburn.html

Many of the authors that I know would hover between the “Hot” and the “Burning”  category.

Here is the rating system from All Romance EBooks. (taken from the FAQ)

1 flame– Stories will either not have consummated love scenes, or if the loves scenes are consummated detail is not  given.
2 flames– Stories will have some love scenes.  These will be more sensual then graphic and will mostly rely on euphemism.
3 flames– Stories will have sensual, yet more explicit love scenes, and the language used to describe them may be more graphic and direct.
4 flames– Stories have frequent love scenes that are explicit and described using graphic and direct language.
5 flames– Stories have a high frequency of love scenes that are explicit, described using graphic and direct language,  and/or contain subject matter that some readers may consider objectionable.

This makes me wonder…. What are some matters that some readers might find objectionable?

Do you like your romances to be rated?  Or would you rather depend on the blurb, the cover and the reputation of the author to determine your purchase of the books?

Have you ever been surprised by a sexual act in a story?  Do you wish that there had been a warning?

Ratings can be so subjective – much like the Scoville heat scale  – that it may be difficult to really put ratings on erotic romance books.

What do you think? Seriously, leave your thoughts in the comments!

Fame is Murder – Freakquency by Caddell Brown Review

Welcome to Caddell Brown’s Book Tour. I am so pleased to host her today on my blog.

freakquency2

Blurb: Rick Chamberland had it all, fame, fortune and women. Until a phone call from his mother forced him to come home and confront the dark secrets of his family’s past. With club singer and small-town girl Song Peters at his side, Rick discovers a demonic presence connecting their families that threatens to destroy all that they hold dear.

My Review:

I had the distinct pleasure of reading an advance copy of Ms. Brown’s book. First of all, this is not a romance, but an erotic supernatural thriller, and it lives up to its promise.

Without giving too much away, Ms. Brown weaves a tale of generational secrets come to light with the return of rock star Rick Chamberland to his hometown. Called home by his mother for the funeral of his childhood pet, Rick crosses the path of Song Peters, an up and coming singer who works part time as a waitress. From then on, the story takes you down a winding road of closet skeletons, promises made and debts (not necessarily money) owed.

When you begin reading, you are sure you are reading one story, but Ms. Brown cleverly switches gears and pulls you even deeper into the supernaturally rich tapestry entwining the families of Song and Rick.

It’s not an easy read—there’s nothing light and fluffy about the subject matter—but it is an engaging narrative that showcases the author’s ability to take us to the dark places in the human psyche.

Highly recommended.

Author bio:
Caddell Brown, born and raised in East Texas, authors a range of speculative fiction. Among her early influences are artists Rene Magritte, film director Andrei Tarkovsky and authors Dan Simmons, Toni Morrison and Ai. It wasn’t until after taking a course in Creative Non-Fiction that she grasped what writing could be as a form of expression and while most of her works are fiction, there’s always something inside each story that touches on her years as an observant youth. Freakquency, her first novel under this penname, was inspired by the storytelling of her uncles, and other legends and folklore from around the world.

'Scuse me while I Kiss this Guy

Misheard/Misunderstood Song Lyrics

I grew up in a pretty conservative family.  My parents didn’t listen to disco and R & B, but rather, the radio was tuned to either talk, easy listening or classical.  It was just the way things were done.  However, at school, the other children would bring snippets of songs that caught my interest and I would go home and twirl the FM dial, searching for these songs.

As a kid, you listen to the lyrics and interpret them through a child’s eyes/experience, which left me saying “huh?” to a lot of the songs.  Read on, and you will see how a little Dahlia just didn’t get half the stuff she was listening to. Let’s begin, and don’t be afraid to laugh.

1.  Pull up to the Bumper (Grace Jones) – “Pull up to the bumper baby, in your long black limousine.” – This song was about parking a car.

2.  Ring My Bell (Anita Ward) – “You can ring my bell, any time, any way” – That’s going to be awful noisy after a while, all that bell ringing….

3.  Push in the Bush – Why make a song about pushing people in to bushes?  Who would like that?

4. Make it With  You (Bread) – Make what exactly?

5.  Lady Marmalade – So…..she wants to have a slumber party/sleepover???

And to show I wasn’t the only clueless child out there, here are some misheard lyrics:

  1. Toto: Africa :There’s nothing that a hundred men on Mars could ever do.
  2. Thompson Twins: Hold Me Now: Hold Me Now (In Your Loving Arms) Oh, Hold My Heart (My Whole Entire Heart)
  3. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band:  Blinded by the Light: Wrapped up like a douche/Another runner in the night

What are some songs that turned out NOT to be about what you thought they were?  I couldn’t have been the only clueless child out there….
