Thriller Movie Review: Bound to Vengeance

Title: Bound To Vengeance Genre: Thriller/Horror Director: Jose Manuel Cravioto IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1230213/ HERE THERE BE SPOILERS. HERE THERE BE SPOILERS. HERE THERE BE SPOILERS. Do not read this review if you don’t want portions of the movie revealed. This movie was recommended to me by an author friend of mine. Given that I don’t shy away from the sometimes terrible thriller/horror movies on Netflix (except the ones that are CLEARLY Lifetime movies), I didn’t hesitate to give this one a shot. Synopsis: A young girl, chained in the basement of a sexual predator, escapes and turns the tables on her captor. First of all, the protagonist was a young woman, not a young girl. Young girl implies to me a ten year old. Second, after I viewed the movie, I went back to the imdb listing and discovered that two men wrote the screenplay, which didn’t surprise me at… Continued

Ida B. Wells – A Dangerous Woman

Before you read this blog post, know that I used to be a teacher. Well, I suppose I still am, given that I have children, I guess I’d better be a teacher. Now that the warning is out of the way, let me let you in on another secret: I don’t believe in history months. History is the past from which we all have emerged, and it is of dire importance all history is taught in its appropriate context. Teaching science? Don’t forget the contributions of all scientists, not just the “popular ones”. Dig deeper and learn something new. 2013  marked the 100th anniversary of the March, 1913 suffrage parade in Washington  staged to coincide with Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. To To mark the occasion, many woman’s groups gathered in Washington to recreate this parade and celebrate how far women have come since the original march. Nice, right? Did you know the original

Horror Movie Review – Wrecker

Title: WreckerGenre: HorrorDirector: Michael BafaroIMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4227282/ This movie almost WRECKED my marriage.  (See what I did there?) My husband had the day off and I suggested we watch a movie. “Hey, we’ll watch this movie. It’s terrible, but it’ll be fun! We’ll have a few laughs!” Famous last words. I’ve seen some horror dreck in my lifetime. I’ve watched the Friday the 13th movies and stuff that I can’t even recall I’ve seen because it’s been so terrible. But I’ve been able to laugh and point and giggle about the director and/or writer being awful. Or awful acting. Sometimes, the movie is bad, but you can see the actors are having fun, so it makes up for it. This was not the case with this movie. This movie was just bad with no redeeming qualities. None. Wait. I did love the red Mustang and some of the shots were gorgeous.

Black History Month, Uncategorized

More than 28 Days

More than 28 days is a hashtag that caught my attention on Google+ during the month of February. The poster, Kymberlyn Reed, took a unique approach to Black History Month. Instead of using the #blackhistorymonth tag, she used her tag to hammer home the fact that Black History Month should certainly be “observed” longer than twenty eight days. Ms. Reed has the right idea. While Black History Month,(just like Women’s History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and other months/observances I’m sure I’m missing), serves to highlight some the achievements of Black people, it shouldn’t stand out like a sore thumb. Black people helped build the United States, and often their achievements were either swept under the rug or stolen by whites. When I had a classroom of eager to learn fourth and fifth graders, I certainly didn’t wait until February to tell them about what is basically the history of

Cleanse Your Headspace

Some writers take a break from writing and go on social media. I don’t find social media relaxing.  In fact, it clutters up the mind and may even stunt creativity. The occasional peek into asocial media platform can turn into following conversations that more often than not ended with name-calling and pointing nasty fingers. The quick scan of another social media feed included more politics than I cared to consume on a daily basis. It was becoming more difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff and my space, the area of my spirit I used for creativity, was suffering. I don’t go in for controversy, detailed celeb news or negative speak. I was always one to believe actions speak louder than words. See something wrong? Do what you can in the moment. I believe that peace can overcome war. I believe in protecting my headspace. Being an writer in

Music Mondays – Sound of Silence

Hey there!  Happy Monday to all of you! I enjoy the new start of the week when I can sit down in front of the computer and get to work. Check out the new graphic!  I figured if I didn’t have to create a new graphic every time I had to write this blog post, it would make things a little easier.  We’ll see! Music Monday -Cover Songs – Sound of Silence I am always a little behind when it comes to music. I don’t really listen to the radio and depend on my Google Play library. My music library includes the American Songbook, show tunes, some almost up to the minute music and of course, a healthy dose of the eighties. I was tooling around on youtube a week or so ago and I found this song by Disturbed. I liked their cover of Land of Confusion: it has
