Star Wars Day – May the Fourth Be with You

Holy crap, it’s Star Wars Day!  That’s right, Star Wars Day.  It’s the day where the ladies (and fellas) can wear the Princess Leia costume, complete with the cinnamon buns on either side of your head, out in public and no one will blink an eye.  I can’t promise that last, but I know that there will be a Star Wars party or two within driving distance. I remember seeing Star Wars in 1977, in a theatre in my hometown that is no longer open.  I can’t tell you who I went with (probably my mom) but I was wearing black Pro-Ked sneakers and probably some horrible 1970s kids’ outfit.  What stands out the most for me in memory is the cantina scene – all those fantastical creatures…and they were moving and walking around!  Talking even!  I mean, I watched the Muppet show every night and had been to Disney… Continued

Tell A Story Day

I happened to do a bit of Internet-questing and found a list of crazy, wacky holidays. We all know about Black Month, Women’s History Month and Arbor Day, but what about National Zucchini Bread Day, Kindergarten Day and….Garlic Day? These holidays are the best because there’s something for everyone. Today, April 27th, is “Tell a Story Day”. As an author, this is right up my alley. And so, I shall tell a story. It’s a short one, and it has been seen before, but there’s no story like an old story, I always say.   Grandma Elsie’s Typewriter   It was hidden in the back corner of the storage facility, one of those “dollar for the first month and we’ll rip you off thereafter” places where she had stored Grandmother’s furniture after they’d sold the house.  There weren’t many of her things left and they were taking this time to

A Peek into Cosplay

This is a guest post by Kymberlyn Reed, whom I had the pleasure to meet on a fiction website. We got acquainted on Facebook, and I dare say, anyone who is a fan of Calvin and Hobbes is alright with me. Please, enjoy reading her experience in cosplay and leave a comment.  Have questions?  Leave a comment! My Life in Cosplay – The Beginning My first experiences with the idea of cosplay happened a year after Star Wars (A New Hope) came out (yes, I am that old). I remember how life-altering that film was for me, a little girl who loathed the weak, simpering “heroines” of Disney films and which populated a great deal of he books I had the misfortune to have read. The moment Princess Leia literally exploded on screen, sassing up Darth Vader without flinching and pretty much rescuing the very guys who were supposed to be rescuing her, I

Natural Spring Cleaning

Though it’s still cold enough here in New Jersey for the furnace to kick on in the morning, the calendar tells us that spring is here. Though I don’t completely believe it, I’ve done my share of spring cleaning. With children and a dog, I have to be careful about the products that I use around the house. Not only can the smells be noxious and trigger a reaction, but also you never know who is touching, sniffing and putting food down on not-quite-dry surfaces. In addition, the pretty colors of many of the cleaning fluids may attract children. If you or a family member are sensitive to these products or would simply like a gentler, more natural way to spring clean your home, here are five tips for natural cleaning, presented in no particular order. Don’t like commercial glass cleaners? Mix ¼ cup vinegar with 1 quart of water

Pets and their Celebrities

“The more I know about people, the better I like my dog.” — Mark Twain I’m feeing pet-like this Saturday.  My old road dog passed away in January, and the family was dithering about getting a new dog.  But, we went down to the Humane Society (which I call the pound) and picked out a loverly nice  purebred (imagine that) pitbull.  She’s as sweet as sugar and so cute to boot. The new dog got me thinking about famous people and their pets.  What do they look like?  A quick web search brought me to the following shots. Enjoy, I’m going to play with the new dog! Hover over the slide with your mouse and the celebrities name will appear at the bottom.  Sorry  it’s not as clear as I’d like it to be!! [slideshow_deploy id=’1581′]
