Quirky Heroines, Happy Endings

Reflections

Time for me to take a deep breath.  I’ve got two (count ’em) two stories out on submission that I’m waiting to hear yay or nay and I’ve gotten ideas for two more stories. A writer FB friend of mine, Kassanna lit a fire under my writer bootie when that very day I’d been at sixes and sevens about what to do next. So now, I’m happily working on a sort of a sequel to Kitty Wishes, which was my first little book released last October.  Does time fly or what?

Speaking of Kitty Wishes, I’d like to send out a big thank you to those of you who read Kitty  Wishes.  It is really quite flattering to see that people appreciate the stories that I make up in my head.  I hope that it was entertaining to you and that you look forward to my upcoming releases.  Right now, I am about 25K into my zombie story, spawned by my watching of The Walking Dead and kinda not really feeling the storyline.  For those of you who watch, when they got stuck on that farm for about sixteen years, I had had it.  I will say the comic was much better.

So there you go.  I leave you with two things:  Thank you to my readers, whoever you may be.  And, if you haven’t purchased Kitty Wishes and are into paranormal lite…well what are you waiting for?

Much love!

Featured Author – Juliet Chastain

I’d like to welcome Juliet Chastain to my blog today.  A little about Juliet:

As an ex-fashion photographer, Juliet Chastain says that, in a way, writing fiction is a lot like photography. She takes a few elements—models and clothes in photography, characters and setting in her writing—and makes them come alive in a compelling story.

And now to the interview….

What is the easiest part of writing for you?  What is the hardest part?

There is no part I’d describe easy. The hardest is usually getting that first draft on paper. But once in a while magic happens and it practically writes itself.

Do you have any advice to aspiring writers?

Just go ahead and write as though you were talking to a friend. Don’t get tied up in knots trying to sound literary.

Name some of your favorite books.

Pride and Prejudice, the first Harry Potter, Moby Dick, anything by Jane Smiley

Do you have a writing regimen?

Get up in the morning, go for a walk and think about what I am going to write, come back, get something to eat and take it to the computer and fiddle with e-mail and generally try to avoid writing but eventually get to work. When I run out of steam in the writing department, I switch to revising and PR and the annoying must-dos of daily life

What are the perks of being an author?

You never have to wear uncomfortable clothes to work—in fact you can work in your pajamas if you want. Sometimes I skip my morning walk and get right to work in my pjs. And it’s fun imagining people from different times or cultures. I’ve been working on a series about Gypsies and I’ve learned so much about those rather mysterious people. Then there are totally imaginary creatures, like the man-wolf in Cry of the Wolf. I’m writing another story about him and the woman he loves in which he explores the difference between his animal and his human nature.

You are having a dinner party.  You are able to invite one literary character, one president, one musician, one sports figure and one movie villain.

Literary Character: Elizabeth Bennet

President: Lincoln

Musician: John Lennon

Sports Figure: Jesse Owens

Movie Villain: the vampire Lestat (although I liked him better in the book)

Quickies:

Fuzzy socks or slippers? Neither. Flip flops—I live in Florida

What’s your favorite shape? round

Crayons, markers or paint? Paint

Spanish or French? French—I studied it for four years and have never been to France–yet

Word Association:

Writer: Madness. Oh dear, that was my first thought.

Cheese: wine. Crackers would be good too.

Bestseller: I wish

Supermarket: hatred and loathing. I hate shopping for food. Now clothes, that’s different!

Now you get to ask me a question:

How on earth do you find time to run this great blog you have? I drink a lot of coffee and stay up until ungodly hours of the night!!  BTW, thank you for the compliment!

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer these questions!

And thank you—it was fun!

For the Love of a Gypsy Lass is Juliet’s latest book, from Breathless Press –

Blurb:

While trying to woo Gypsy singer Talaitha Grey, Lord Harry Beresford does everything wrong. Is her attraction to him strong enough that she can forgive him?

Lord Harry Beresford is used to having everything his way—that is, until he falls in love with Gypsy singer Talaitha Grey. Proud Talaitha is as unimpressed by his title as she is by his wealth, but can she fight her powerful attraction to the man behind those things?

Featured Author – Danica Avet

I’d like to welcome Danica Avet who is the featured author for today.

A little about Danica:

Danica Avet was born and raised in the wilds of South Louisiana (that would be somewhere around Houma) where mosquitoes are big enough to carry off small children and there are only two seasons: hot and hotter. With a BA in History, she figured there were enough fry cooks in the world and decided to try her hand at writing. For eight years she played at writing, but in 2008, she decided to get serious and began down the rocky road to publication.
Unmarried with no children, Danica is the lucky pet of a compulsively needy dog and two cats. The pitter-patter of little feet has been known to make her break out into a cold sweat.

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author?

Probably that my characters sometimes act immature. I have a goofy sense of humor and it shows up once in a while…okay, a lot of times in my books.

What is the easiest part of writing for you?  What is the hardest part?

Ideas are the easy part for me. I’ll pick up a story idea from something someone says, from a song, or from a dream I have. It’s the execution that’s the hardest part for me. Sometimes what my brain puts down on the page isn’t exactly what my creative mind wanted. It doesn’t always jive, so I have to finesse the story to make the logical part fit the fantastical part of my creative process.

Name some of your favorite movies.

Oh man, almost too many! Snatch, Die Hard, Pitch Black (Vin Diesel, rar!), The Muppets (I know, it’s kind of thrown in there with a bunch of action flicks, but I love it), The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Star Wars, etc.

Name some of your favorite books.

This is even worse than picking my favorite movies! A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole, Dark Lover by J.R. Ward, Sheltered by Charlotte Stein, Annie’s Song by Catherine Anderson, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the entire pride series by Shelly Laurenston, and the dragon kin books by G.A. Aiken.

Do you have a writing regimen?

I try to write five days of the week with weekends off unless I’m “feeling the muse”. Sometimes a story has me in the grips and I can’t stop writing, but that’s a very rare occurrence.

What are the perks of being an author?

Going to writer’s conferences and meeting people just like me. Writers are my people because they don’t look at me strangely when I say “You know, I had this idea for a book about a virgin succubus, what do you think?”

You are having a dinner party.  You are able to invite one literary character, one president, one musician, one sports figure and one movie villain.

Literary Character: Frankenstein’s monster. I always felt sorry for him and I bet no one ever invites him anywhere.

President: Andrew Jackson (I’m from south Louisiana so he’s something of a local legend)

Musician: Maynard James Keenan of Tool

Sports Figure: Drew Brees (Saints fan! And he seems like such a nice man) TSS:  And he would probably bring something really good to eat.

Movie Villain: Hans Gruber from Die Hard because he’s so awesomely bad

Quickies:

Fuzzy socks or slippers? Fuzzy socks!

What’s your favorite shape? Triangle

Crayons, markers or paint? Crayons

Spanish or French? French

Word Association:

Writer: Witty

Cheese: Yellow

Bestseller: Stephen King

Supermarket: Hell

Now you get to ask me a question:

How do you come up with all of these amazingly hard to answer questions? LOL!  I had to dig up something that was both fun to read and a little challenging.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer these questions, Danica!

Olympus, Inc., 1

Enforcer Roxana Love works for Olympus, Inc., the corporate face of the Greek pantheon, and knows better than to trust anyone in administration. Assigned to find and protect the newest member of Olympus, Inc., she figures it’ll be a grab and go job, until she discovers her assignment is the same man she slept with the night before. Keeping things professional will be near impossible when she can’t decide if she wants to kill or kiss him.

One night with Roxana isn’t enough for Mason Landry, despite how crazy she seems. However, he isn’t given much choice when he’s thrown through his window, attacked by mythical beings, and told he’s part-immortal. Roxana’s explanation is too fantastical to believe, but if it keeps him by her side, he’ll go along for the ride. Meeting gods and dodging monsters from lore is nothing compared to the fight he’ll have winning Roxana’s heart.

Excerpt:

She woke up in a puddle of drool. Roxana made a face. Her mouth tasted like a cat had taken a shit in it in the middle of the night. Ugh. Morning breath. She needed a toothbrush and a gallon of mouthwash. Now.

She rolled away from her drool, throwing her arm out. It landed on something solid and warm. She froze. What. The. Hell. She tried to remember what happened the night before. Yeah, it didn’t take long for the memories to come roaring back. Sex. Lots of sex. With a human! A human who had managed to keep up with her, twist her inside out, and made her come so many times, she felt like they set a world record.

A groan hovered. No, no regrets. She’d needed last night to work her frustrations at Zeus out of her system. And it had so worked. She felt more relaxed than she had in years.

She cracked open one eye and peered around the room. She was in his apartment. Thank gods it wasn’t hers. He was simply too good at making her come to injure by kicking him out of her bed.

Dried spit on the side of her face reminded her she’d been drooling. Drooling! Ugh. She pushed herself up and looked over at Mason. He was flat on his stomach, half of his body hanging off the bed. She looked at herself. She was a total bed hog, and she knew it. She’d probably pushed him that way at some point in the night because she was in the center of the bed with plenty of room. She smirked.

Served him right after that last round of mind-blowing sex.

Early morning light slanted over the bed, caressing his skin like a lover. She could stare at his body forever, but that would not work. She had a job to do. Heaving a mental sigh, she eased out of the bed. He’d been a good lay for the night, good enough to leave her a little wobbly when she tried to stand.

Okay. That never happened to her. She could usually go several rounds and still have enough energy and strength to kick ass afterwards. Mason had definitely been worth the time she lost the night before. Her thighs were stained with her juices and his cum. She sighed. Glad she’d conjured a pack of towelettes when she left the bar last night, she grabbed a few to clean herself. With the way they’d gone at it, it was a damn good thing she couldn’t get pregnant from a mortal. Her body needed immortal seed to conceive. She shook her head with a soft laugh.

She found her four thousand dollar dress crumpled on the floor. Eh, looked like she had another dress to donate to the cleaning service. She waved her hand towards the dress, sending it to her apartment on Mount Olympus. She conjured a pair of distressed Hudson jeans and an Aiko tunic because she’d be combing the streets for Zeus’s friggin’ grandson. She’d leave the panties for Mason. They were her favorite, yeah, but were so torn up she couldn’t wear them again.

Roxana smiled and dressed as quickly as she could. No use hanging around for Mason to get all weepy when he saw the best piece of ass he’d ever had walking out the door. She wasn’t cocky. She’d seen the enthralled look on his face. She stopped to buff her nails. Yeah, she was good. And in a damn good mood after yesterday’s self-pity party.

It took a little longer to find her shoes. She leaned on the bed to put them on, her gaze eating up the sight of a naked, exhausted Mason sprawled on the bed. He was so sexy. She sighed. His skin was so gorgeous, like dark satin poured over steely muscles. Yeah, she could get used to that sight. The scars littering his skin only made him much more attractive to her. She so loved a male who—

She blinked. Shook her head. A little laugh escaped her. She was imagining things, of course. Roxana stood up straight and swung her purse over her shoulder. She headed to the door, pausing in the doorway.

And looked back at the big man on the bed. His head was turned towards her, his face relaxed in sleep. She tilted her head to the left, then to the right. Her heartbeat spiked. No. No, no, no!

Her purse fell to the floor with a thud, but she ignored it as she stalked back to the bed. Upon closer inspection, the scars looked familiar. Too familiar for her peace of mind. The scar tissue on her back and chest itched. No, this could not be happening.

Her legs gave out, and she sprawled on the floor next to the bed. She stared up at the ceiling as her brain swirled with the implications of what she’d done.

She’d had sweaty, dirty monkey sex with Heracles’s son. She was so screwed, she’d be lucky if she could hold her head up at the next inter-company mixer. Her hands curled into fists.

She was going to kill Mason and make it look like an accident. She was an Enforcer; she was good at things like that. He’d never even realize it. The bastard. He’d probably tell his man-whore dad all about her begging him for his cock. Impotent tears burned her eyes as she imagined the hard-earned respect she’d gained over the last two thousand years slipping away from her.

Free for all Friday – Take A Bow

It’s Friday and I must say this has been some week. Despite the super high temps on Monday here in the Northeast USA, dental surgery and various family mishaps, I finished a story.  Finished.  Fin.

Now, the editing process begins, the tweaking, the second guessing, etc.  However, I will gladly embrace this part of the process because I am working on a finished product.

Finishing a piece, whether it be 3 k or 30k give me a sense of accomplishment that boosts my creativity for the next project.  Now, I don’t know whether that’s good or bad, but I’ve learned to carry a notebook in which I scribble bare-bones synopses (synopsisesss?) of upcoming stories.  In the time that I’ve been writing, I’ve learned a few things.

1) Have a couple of WIPs in progress (while you are working on one, your mind is going a mile a minute on the other.  Use the passive aggressiveness of your muse to your advantage)

2) Set a word count.  My goal varies between 1000 and 2500 a day. I have three children, so I can’t spend as much time in front of the computer as I’d like ot.  (See the little notebook)

3) When you get an idea ALWAYS WRITE IT DOWN (Did I mention the little notebook?

4) Whine to your author friends on Facebook.  Not only will they give you the support you need, you also see your whiny words in black and white and realize, “Wow, I’m really whiny! I could have written 200 words on my WIP instead of whining away like that!” (But one does deserve a whine post every now and again…)

So I’m already outlining the next story.  And have two other waiting for my attention.  I say I’m going into the weekend with a pleasantly full plate!

Blessings!
