Christmas is Wednesday. I am surprised that I am calm and prepared. Christmas in our house is all about the children anyway, so it’ll be fun to see them open their gifts.
In the metropolitan area of New York City, several stations have taken it upon themselves to play nothing but Christmas music to get folks in the mood for the holiday. Mind you, I love Christmas music, but I swear if I hear “Do they know it’s Christmas?” one more time, I’m going to have to fire off an email of protest to both the radio station manager AND Bob Geldolf.
That being said, I have my personal favorites that I will pause and listen to when they float across the radio waves. I know you’re just dying to hear what catches Dahlia’s ear, so I will not keep you in suspense.
Being a bit of a traditionalist, my list will probably skew a little “older”, but hopefully you will discover and adopt some new favorites.
Whitney Houston – Do You Hear What I Hear?
This is one of my favorite Christmas songs, no matter who sings it, but Whitney’s voice adds such an ethereal quality to the simple words that you can’t help but stop and listen.
Handel – The Hallelujah Chorus
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir seldom disappoints and their rendition of this Christmas classical classic does Handel a lovely homage. It’s best when they don’t cheat the tenor part by adding altos and the sopranos don’t get screechy. The trumpet is especially striking on this one.
The Little Drummer Boy
I’m not sure if you remember the Christmas special that was stop-action animation a la Rudolph, but it brings the story of the poor little drummer boy “who had no gift to bring” and his gift to the baby Jesus.
White Christmas – Bing Crosby
“To hear sle-hey-hey bells in the snow.” Nobody sings this song like Bing. (And I’m a huge Sinatra fan, LOL)
Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song
Nothing says Christmas like this.
Enjoy your holiday!
