Quirky Heroines, Happy Endings

Love and Lyrics

http://freedigitalphotos.net

Don’t they just go together?  Not quite like a horse and carriage, but humans have been writing love songs to each other since…forever, right? Love songs are the glue that keeps us connected to the love in our souls.

“I look at you all…see the love there that’s sleeping….” (George Harrison)  A good love song can bring that love to the surface, allow it to blossom and flow.

You see that one person and suddenly…”Zing! Went the strings of my heart!” (James F. Hanley)

Coming from a musical background, from piano lessons at five to playing in the high school band to singing lessons, I’ve heard a ton of varied music in my life.  Some of it was by choice, other times, not so much.  (Contrary to what my piano teacher wants me to believe, Bartok is just….ugh.  But I digress.)

Because of this background, I’ve heard a ton of Broadway show tunes and pieces from the American Songbook.    Some are good, some are….not so much.  What stands out most for me, however, is the lyrics.  It fascinates me how the lyricists were able to put together simple words to evoke such meaning and emotion in the listener.  Certainly, some of that is also inspired by the music, the melody to which it is set, but many of these songs are poetry in and of themselves.  I’m reaching back.  Not as far back as Mozart, but mid 20th century back. Come on with me, would you?

And of course, I’m going to give examples!!!

Tonight from West Side Story

Music by Leonard Bernstein, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
This song is the pronouncement of the true (but forbidden) love between Tony and Maria.

“Only you, you’re the only thing I’ll see forever
In my eyes, in my words and in everything I do…
Nothing else but you…..Ever….”

Further on in the song:

“Today, the world was just an address
A place for me to live in
No better than all right…
But here, you are
And what was just a world is a star….”

The word love is never, ever mentioned in this song until the very end.  But how powerful is their love that it can turn a world into a star? Indescribable.

And if the nebulous meaning of love escapes us, how about the power of a kiss?

How Little We Know
Songwriters:  Carolyn Lee, Phil Springer

How little we know! How much to discover…
What chemical forces flow from lover to lover!
How little we understand what touches off that tingle,
That sudden explosion when two tingles intermingle.

Who cares to define what chemistry this is?
Who cares, with your lips on mine, how ignorant bliss is?
So long as you kiss me, and the world around us shatters….
How little it matters, how little we know.

The last one, I promise, but this is a goodie:

All the Things You Are
Songwriters:  Kenny Gorelick, Walter Afanasieff

You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long…
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song

You are the angel glow that lights a star
The dearest things that I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you
And someday I’ll know that moment divine
When all the things you are, are mine

Look up the Frank Sinatra/Tommy Dorsey version from 1939-40.
It humbles me, as a mere writer of romance, to try my hand at describing love to you, the reader, when so many of these shining examples are already out there for the taking.  I’m not sure that I can do better than they have.

What are some of the songs you look to for inspiration, to evoke the gooey center feeling of love within you?

Writer’s Block – Defeated!

As a writer, I’m sure that you’ve heard other writer’s complain about “writer’s block”. You’ve hit that brick wall before. I’m sure you’ve read numerous articles on how to cure writer’s block. And yet, the “muse is silent” or “can’t seem to put ‘pen to paper’”.

Guess what? There’s no such thing as writer’s block, or at least the “writer’s block” that so many writers imagine.

Writer’s block doesn’t swoop down (or up) and sit in your mind and keep you from letting the words flow. It’s not a dam, clogging the words that you so desperately want to get on paper. It’s not a malevolent external force over which you have no control.

Writer’s block is like the Force: It’s in you.

Writer’s block is fear. Fear of judgment by others about the crazy story with too much sex you just wrote. Fear of ridicule about that ridiculous storyline about the talking garbage can that saved children from drowning. Fear of failure: this great story that you just outlined? You won’t finish. Fear of ‘not being good enough’ and/or envy: you see everywhere that writers are finishing their fifth, fifteenth, thirtieth book and you’re still chugging along on your second. Or you’re unpublished and have a stack of “no thanks” rejections to prove it.

It’s in you. Your fears, your shortcomings, your trepidation of….whatever. It’s a mind block.

And guess what? It could also be a physical manifestation of issues.

Brain feel fogged? A while ago I wrote a post on Herbs for Clarity that helped me break through a brain block that I suffered through a while ago. Since then, I’ve paid close attention to my body. Remember that old adage, “Garbage in, garbage out”. Yeah. It’s totally true.

Whenever I feel “writer’s blockish” I immediately get up from the computer and run down my three point checklist, kind of like the twenty nine points of inspection they claim to give you “for free” when you buy new tires. (I don’t believe they check all that, but let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, shall we?)

1. Am I dehydrated?

According to some sources, this past July was the hottest July on record here in the Northeast. Keeping hydrated is important at any time of the year, but easy to forget. Feeling fogged? Have a glass of water. Then, drink another. The brain is 70% water (http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/propertyyou.html) . Keep it juiced, folks.

2. Am I eating too much junk food?

Sitting and snacking at the computer while you furiously pound out your next masterpiece is something that too many of us do. It’s easy, it’s quick and it keeps us from wandering away in the middle of a scene. I’m sure if you could get over the embarrassment of wearing an adult diaper, someone would do that too. Anything to keep from getting up.

You’ve heard this before, I know, I know, but in order to keep your body (which by the way includes your brain) in top working condition, you’ve got to feed it the food it needs, which doesn’t include copious amounts of cheese curls and chocolate. Ditto for the take-out fast food that you’re eating because ‘you just don’t have the time to cook’. (This goes for you dolls AND guys out there, because I don’t discriminate when it comes to cooking.)

Feed your body the vegetables, meat, dairy, vitamins, whatever, that it needs. If that means grilled tofu and Brussels sprouts, or a thick steak, potatoes and spinach, so be it. Just make sure you eat right. Keep the chocolate, candy, chips and soda to a minimum.

3. Am I spending too much time on social media?
Let’s face it, if you are in certain communities, everyone is promoting something. It’s the nature of the beast. Too much of that flow on Twitter, Facebook, wherever, can be detrimental to your sense of well-being. Look! So and so is promoting their twentieth book! Jack be nimble has made over 30 trillion sales TODAY of his new book! Amy is going to let you in on HER secret to selling 7 gazillion books in just one month!

Move away, back off. THEY are not YOU. YOU are not THEM. This is a good time to exercise a little tunnel vision, especially when you’re in a low spot in your own creativity. Go you own pace. Stay in your own lane. Stop watching other people. DO what you DO and be happy with that.

Spending too much time on social media means that you’re spending time away from your work in progress, or from doing something that is healthy for you like exercising or pondering nature. Keep it to a minimum.

Best way to beat writer’s block? Keep it from happening. Keep yourself healthy and wise, and do what works for you.

Luscious Literaries has Launched

Image
http://freedigitalphotos.net

Welcome! Glad you stopped by the Luscious Literaries.  We’re a collection of sinfully sexy writers who compose prose that makes the steam rise.  (I left the cheap joke alone, I’m a classy broad.)  I’m Dahlia, pretty new to the writing game compared to some of my cohorts and I must say I’m in excellent company.  I’d admired these talented gals from afar before I made their acquaintance.  Since the Luscious theme for September is first times, if you lean a little closer I’ll tell you the first things I learned about them.  Please, keep it under your hat, okay?  I don’t want them to know I’m talking about them.

Kassanna – My girl can put together a story.  Her Club Lexx series is hot, and I don’t throw that word around lightly.  Her secret gem is her story Keys to Victory –a complex, interesting and sexy story. First time I actually spoke to her via chat, she gave me a kind but stern lecture, which boiled down to “get your sweet ass in gear and write”.  A constant inspiration whether it be a pat on the head or a foot in the butt, she’s got it for you.

Chacelyn Pierce – First of all, the name itself is…sublime.  Are mages and djinns your cup of tea?  How about international jet-setting thieves?  She’s got it for you.  She can also whip up an awesome cover and loves her men with long hair.

Lorraine Nelson – Funny, tough and smart – Lorraine doesn’t waste any time.  Don’t believe me?  I was literally shocked at the sheer number of books that she has out in a short amount of time. Her fave post?  “Wanna sprint?”

Angelina Rain – Angelina grabbed my attention with her book Rescued Love with the Rottweiler on the cover.  Romance and rescued dogs?  That’s a winner! She’s always ready with a word of encouragement or celebration!

W Lynn Chantale – Always good for a cheerful word or a wry comment. She’s made me laugh out loud in front of my computer screen more than once. Plays bass guitar and writes sensual love scenes.  Don’t take my word for it… check out Lust and Bound.

Shyla Colt – Shyla and I became acquainted at an online fiction site and to be truthful, she was the impetus for me to answer a submissions call with my second manuscript. (I’ll give the story of my first sometime later, ha!) Constantly creating even with young ones at home, she’s a powerhouse author of the first kind and writes about close encounters of the third.

Nikki Prince – Basically, she had a question about a fiction site and I had an answer.  New to publishing, I know she’s got a few sexy stories in the works (but don’t tell her I said anything).  Her story Mocha Kisses is short but fiery!

And me?  Well, since this may be your first time meeting me, I’ll run it down real quick:  I’m a night owl, I love football and it’s always five o’ clock somewhere.

The Luscious Literaries are as pleased to meet you as you are them, I promise you.  Stay tuned for our first contest giveaway!
