Quirky Heroines, Happy Endings

Short Stories

As a romance author, I’ve written quite a few short stories and read even more.  I’ve read short stories by industry authors as well as the “classics” by Edgar Allen Poe, O. Henry, Richard Matheson and Stephen King.  In addition, I’ve read anthologies of short stories.  As an author, I feel that I am in a constant state of learning and try my best to expose myself to a variety of writing and writers.

There was one thing I noticed about the good short stories:  they didn’t explain me to death.  Nothing bothers me more than a short story that tries to tell me every detail of each character’s back story in the first three paragraphs.  It bores me.  It bogs me down.  Ditto to the over-explanations after each character does something. “She brushed her hair, something that she had done for years and her mother had done before she perished in a terrible auto accident seven years ago with her father on a rainy day.” Too much information at once.

A fellow author of mine asked me how I wrote a short story.  Given that I’m no great writing genius—believe me, a woman knows her limitations—I gave them the best advice I could:  start in medias res and weave in your back story from there.  Notice I said “weave” in your back story”  I didn’t say “plop” it on the table in front of the reader like an half-baked cake.

I give my readers all the credit in the world.  I don’t try to tell them every single detail about the character from kindergarten on up.  In a short story, I try to give you just enough for you to understand the character in the situation at that moment in time.

Think of the short story as a snapshot from a picnic.  The children are playing in the background, two women are chatting at a table while a man hands a plate to teenage girl with a sad face.  If it is the teen’s story, I don’t need to write you a history of what happened to her in third grade when she lost the science contest, do I?  It’s not germane to the story of the teen girl.

But I do have to tell you that in fifth grade, there was a girl who bullied her mercilessly and the teen has just found out that this same girl will be in her ninth grade class when school starts in September.  Do I need to tell you the bully girl’s history?  I don’t think so, because the story is about the teen girl in the picture at a summer picnic.  She is the main character.

Short stories are difficult to write.  It seems that there is always more to tell of a character’s life, right?  Well, there is.  It’s simply not going to be told in that particular story and perhaps you’ll have to fill that in for yourself.

What are your thoughts on the short story?  Are they fun to read?  Are they fun to write? Leave your opinion in the comments.

A Tradition of Storytelling

When one thinks of tradition at this time of year, Thanksgiving, Christmas etc. spring to mind.  But what of those ongoing traditions, the ones that we practice every day and pass on to others?

In those times the lights were out, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy,  I realized that as a parent, I’ve passed on the tradition of creativity. During the day, the little ones would gather around the coffee table with their crayons, colored pencils and more sheets of white paper than I care to count.  They would draw, argue, discuss, draw some more and produce a book, which then was ‘published’ through the use of numerous staples.

How did they learn/want to do this?  Children imitate what they see.   I remember when I was writing some story or another and my oldest son came into my office and saw my feverish scribbling on a lined note pad.  He says, “I see you like writing stories.  I do too.”  And it’s true.  They love writing stories.

The two boys have “books” where they have drawn characters (usually knights or ninja) engaged in fierce battle with a few lines of prose added at the top or the bottom to explain the picture.  My daughter is more practical, however, as she writes “how-to” books as in “How to get rid of a Monster under your bed” and “how to make birthday cupcakes”.

As authors, we are part of a tradition that has been passed down from when people first drew pictures on cave walls.  In the present we draw our pictures in letters and electronic ink.

The next time you sit down in front of your computer, your iPad, your pencil-n-paper, think about the larger tradition you are part of as a writer, a storyteller.  Honor that tradition by continuing to tell and pass on your stories.  Remember, someone is watching you and may be inspired to become part of the writing tradition themselves.

Thankful for – Rejection?

Friends to lovers stories always touch my heart, and my holiday offering, Second Chance Christmas, is an example of this trope.  I’ll let you in on a little secret, these characters, Zach and Naomi, were the first romance couple that I ever created.  Their story was a mess, (and I knew it in retrospect)  and was my first rejection.

When I read that first rejection email, my face got hot.  It was two days before I could tell my husband that the story I had worked on for the last month had been rejected.  He, of course, was supportive, compassionate, and insistent that I get right back on that writing horse and keep going.  I set their story aside, but eventually discovered that they had come so alive in my head that they had to have a story, even just a short story, of their own.

And thus, the story was born.  My heroine, Naomi, is rich, privileged, pretty and rather unhappy at the beginning of the story.  Though she gives the appearance of having it all, hot boyfriend included, it’s not all that she bargained for.   Eventually things reach a crisis level for her emotionally.

Eleven months later, we see a calm, more mature Naomi, who still bears the physical scars of her personal crisis and is making progress healing emotionally.  Still, the shame of what she’s done clings to her and she avoids her old friends, preferring to exist in near-solitude, filling the void in other people’s vacated houses over holidays and long weekends.

Computer tricks bring an old friend to her door and his mild, but firm insistence on helping her face her past gives her new hope and a new companion for the future.

Oh, and yes, they do have hot friends-to-lovers sex.  😉

As I said, don’t tell my other characters, but Naomi and Zach are near and dear to my heart.  I certainly hope that you enjoy their story and I thank Amira Press for giving them a lovely home.

Buy a Book, Save a Life

Please welcome my author-friend Angelina Rain with a special message.

BUY A BOOK, SAVE A LIFE

The holiday season is upon us and it truly is the season of giving.

Animal welfare is a very important issue to me, so I’m going to donate 50% of ALL
my royalties from the sales of Rescued Love to the Humane Society of the United
States (http://www.humanesociety.org/).

If you buy a copy of Rescued Love between October 1 and December 31, a portion of
the money you paid will go towards helping the animals. What could be better? You
get an entertaining romance and to give back to a very important cause.

What are readers saying about Rescued Love?

“I’m very grateful that the author is making this a series. I certainly can’t wait until
the second book! All these things make this a Must Read!”

“Rescued Love is a beautiful blending of mystery and sweet romance with an
unexpected twist.”

“Wonderful heartwarming story!”

“I appreciate the unique story the author came up with… It’s entertaining, unique,
and I’m hoping that book two is not only about Petra, but about the dogs who made
it through.”

RESCUED LOVE BLURB:

One by one, household dogs disappear only to come back after senseless abuse.

Veterinarian Jordan Powell will stop at nothing to ensure her patients’ safety. Even
if that means seeking help from ex-boyfriend, police officer Nate Thrillson, the man
whose heart she once broke.

The last thing Nate wants is a relationship. He has an inoperable cancerous tumor in
his brain and his days are numbered. Yet, he couldn’t resist Jordan.

It’s a race against time to save the dogs and the man who captured her heart. Can
the doctor, who made a life out of helping animals, heal a human?

Blogtoberfest – Halloween

freedigitalphotos.net

A big thank you to those who stuck with me through my kind of blogging marathon.   I didn’t make all my days as planned, but I’m pretty pleased what I did accomplish.  Blogtoberfest was a huge help in getting my blogging off the ground, planning posts ahead of time and most of all, sticking to a schedule.   Now, I feel I can roll into NaNoWriMo with some purpose and determination.

How did I do it?  I pre-wrote a lot of the posts.  Then, I decided, for it to be a true Blogtoberfest, I should make an effort to blog every day.  At times, real life intruded, but to be honest, if I am going to be a writer….this IS part of my real life.  Treating writing as a job rather than something I merely dabbled in, I learned, is the key to making it work for me. Your mileage may vary.

Anyhoo, Happy Halloween – I’m writing this on the Monday before, because I have no idea what the situation will be on Wednesday.

Again, thank you to all who commented, stopped by and clicked!

Have wonderful, safe day!
