Quirky Heroines, Happy Endings

Extra! Extra! Romance Writers Bust Genres!

Or how I just learned I wrote horror.

While sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, sometimes a romance is not just a romance.

If anyone on the street asked me what I did (besides wait for football season and tinker with computer equipment) I would say I was a romance writer.  Which is true.  I write about people finding each other, falling in love and living happily ever after.  I enjoy writing those happy endings.

With the release of Loving Among the Dead, my post-apocalyptic romance set in a zombie wasteland, a friend of mine told me my book “scared” her. I laughed.  How could the love story between Sky and Jude be scary?

Because of the zombies.

A light bulb (the incandescent one, not those terrible twisty tube ones) came on in my head.  Zombies=horror/science fiction.  Sky and Jude= romance.

Did I just write romance with a huge side of horror?

Seems like I did.

Blame the comic books…ahem, graphic novels. They bump up the imagination…a lot.

But the fact still remains that among the many romance writers out there, especially the totally awesome ones with which I am personally acquainted, bust genre on a regular basis.  A love story is not just a love story in these writer’s hands.

It’s an adventure.  It can be a visit to planet in another time or an alternate universe.  It could be a murder mystery.  It could be a family drama. It could  be a western.  Space opera anyone?

It could contain zombies.

Readers – remember, you’re romance may not be ‘just a romance’.

Cheers!

Movies that Sin

Though I usually have a ton of work to do, both online and off, I take the time to cruise around on YouTube, seeing what I can see.  I skip the show promos, the terrible movie trailers and the more boring things trying to get my attention.

One day, while trying to understand the movie Promentheus (that never happened), I happened upon –GASP– Cinema Sins.

These are short video where a narrator takes you through a film and points out plot holes, cliches and other terrible sins the movies we watch try to get past us.  It’s a great way to spend a couple of minutes, that’s for sure.

The movie 2012 was so chock-full of cliches and ridiculousness, I wondered if they had any writers at all on the movie.  And Danny Glover is no replacement for Morgan Freeman as the president, that’s for sure.

Come along with me as Cinema Sins recounts the terrible things 2012 foist upon its audience.

WARNING:  SPOILERS!!! (But you already knew that, right?)

Movie Geek Monday: Famous Quotes from 1980s Films

There’s nothing like watching a movie and hearing an actor saying a line so apt or so memorable that it becomes part of pop culture.  In addition, it’s also awesome to hear a line that becomes a part of your personal repetoire of those quoations that are inspirational or just plain funny.

You’ve heard these before.  You’ve seen them before.  Heck, you’ve probably said them before or at least muttered along with the character when the line was said in the movie.  Well, here are some of my favorites from the 1980s.

Airplane

Spinal Tap

Shining

Aliens

Sci-Fi Movie Mistakes

If you’ve been reading this blog long enough, you’ll realize a few things about me:  I love music, movies and trivia that surrounds them both.  Knowing that something extra about a movie or a song just makes the experience all the more worthwhile.

Today, I’m going to show you a few of my favorite movie mistakes. From classic movies to more recent ones, no matter how many eyes are on the movie, there is always something that slips by.  Let’s take a look.

Jurassic Park

Star Wars ( I don’t bother with that episode 1,7, 4 mess. I’m old school.  It’s friggin Star Wars, simple as that.)

Hot off the Press – Reluctant Magic

ReluctantMagic (1)I’ve got a new release!  This one is a short through Mocha Memoirs Press.  What’s it about?  Well, dear readers, I’ll tell you. It’s about a witch.

After the suicide of her husband, former witch Kamilah Lake wants a normal life, free from witchcraft. But the stigma of her mother’s legacy clings to her, leaving her isolated from many of the close minded town folk. But when a runaway bull invades her back yard, bringing with tempting Native American veterinarian Dr. Granger Hawkins, Kami can’t deny her attraction. Problem is, Dr. Hawkins is straight science, no chaser and witchcraft is in Kami’s blood.

I’d love to tell you more, but I can’t without giving away the fun of the story.  Click on the picture to purchase!

I’ve always been partial to stories that used magic…my ultimate favorite series is the Chronicles of Narnia (not too crazy about the movies though).  I wanted to see a woman of color as a witch…a reluctant one who is perhaps in the throes of rejecting her heritage because of past woes.

After writing this story, I think I might want to visit with Dr. Hawk and Kami again sometime soon!

Thanks for reading!
