Beta Males – The New Black?

Beta males can be the best of both worlds.  While they don’t pound their chests or roar like the Alpha male does—and let’s admit on some level that’s actually appealing up to a point—they are crafty thinkers that get what they want by using their intelligence and maybe a little bit of brawn.  They reel us in with their charm, their humor and those sweet puppy dog eyes.  He’s the nice guy who’s had that crush on you forever, but was patiently waiting until that cruel Alpha broke your heart to comfort you.  He might be that “work husband” with whom you’ve collaborated on numerous projects and were too busy to see the love shining in those eyes until one night late at the office…..you get the general idea. Remember Archimedes?  “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the… Continued

Alpha Males Gone Wild

I truly believe that in order to be a good writer of romance you also have to be a reader of romance.  It doesn’t necessarily mean that one copies the styles of other writers, but by reading a lot of romance novels, you, as a writer, are training yourself to see themes, tropes and other traits that run through many romance novels.   Once you understand these traits, you as the writer have a framework in which to work your literary magic. This brings me to the characterization of the hero.  In many, many romance novels that I have read, and I am certainly not going to mention any names or titles, it seems, to be at least, that the hero is often, well, how shall I put it delicately, ah, a bit of “Pushy Paul”.  Why do I call him that?  Well, it seems that through most of the story

Building Characters

I suppose being an author and probably living with an author is an acquired taste, because some of us can be pretty eccentric.  Some us hear voices in our heads, urging us to “tell my story, tell my story”, others of our ilk wander around with ink stained fingers and index cards jammed in our purses or our pockets.  Or there’s a notebook full of scrawls in the nightstand drawer, or better yet, the glove compartment of the minivan.  Point is, as a writer, you’ve got a lot of characters to handle and bring to life. Like many writers, I didn’t spring full blown from the earth and write a best seller my first time sitting down in front of a keyboard or putting pencil to notebook paper.  When I look back at some of the first stories, or half stories I penned, I cringe.  The characters are flat, they

But the Work Never Stops

I am currently working on yet another story – it’s a holiday themed story that I wrote about a year ago and am revamping.  Trouble is, the characters are changing in my head as I write and giving me a whole new story!  Granted, it’s a much better story ( at least I think so) but it’s so much more work for me.  What began as a simple editing journey has ventured into the world of more possibilities. Granted, I’m not complaining.  It’s always fun when the characters, revisited though they may be, are giving new life to the story  – more creativity is what an author needs.  I like my characters, I love the story and I am also enjoying this new journey. That’s it for today, I have to get back to the drawing board. Toodles!

Don't I Feel Pretty!

I just got the news a few days ago that my first book will be published by Evernight Publishing.  I simply can’t put into words how totally thrilled I am that the hard work that I put into my writing has finally paid off.  So much work to do in the coming weeks, to which I’m looking forward.  And of course, I will continue to work on the several other projects that I have hovering on my hard drive. In other news, I am enjoying the rather hot and humid New Jersey summer.  The sun has been out nearly every day and it has been simply lovely! Signing off for now to do some work, but I will certainly keep you updated.   D
