Blogtoberfest – Loving Among the Dead Playlist

It’s been a while since my first zombie novel, Loving Among the Dead was released through Loose Id. However, no matter how long ago I’ve written a book, the characters stay with me for quite a while. It takes a lot to get into a characters personality- how he or she walks, talks, behaves and reacts in certain situations, and this doesn’t go away very quickly. With that in mind, I started looking through my Google playlists and found a list of songs I used to evoke moods with my two characters, Jude and Sky. A little about the book: Jude is my female lead. Horror is different for everyone.  I don’t think the “experts” can agree on what horror is and thus there are tons of movies and books that represent the horror genre, as it should be. I also believe that horror is different depending on where you are in your life.  What’s represents horror for a twenty-year-old might be old-hat to a forty year old. Books that resounded for me in my twenties are just “eh” now that I’m a lovely seasoned woman of a certain age. But Stephen King’s Pet Semetary broke that mold.  It’s just as frightening now as when I first read it many years ago. Blogtoberfest – Dark Country Songs

There’s no song like a country song.  Whether you’re into Charley Pride, Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline or the “new school” of Garth Brooks, Trace Adkins, Miko Marks and a score of others, there’s not a doubt in my mind that country’s roots are entwined with the blues both musically and lyrically.  Some of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard were from either of these genres, usually by men, who’ve acted up so bad that they drove their woman, and sometimes their dog, away. Blogtoberfest – Clinton Road, New Jersey

There is a great magazine out there called Weird NJ, wherein the authors note and describe weird/haunted places in New Jersey.  It’s a fun read, but especially around this time of year.  One of the most enduring legends is Clinton Road, located in West MIlford, New Jersey. Snippets from the New York Daily News: “It’s like a dark highway into people’s innermost fears.” That’s how Mark Moran, publisher and co-creator of the Weird NJ magazine and website, sums up Clinton Road, a quiet and twisty stretch of road roughly 55 miles northwest of New York City. “People definitely play on the legend [of Clinton Road],” said Mark Moran.
