Camilla pressed her lips together to keep herself from remarking on Mari's sugary disrespect of her espresso. Besides that, she hated having them referred to as scars, even though it was reality. She raised her fingers to her face and touched the mask. "It's more than a few scars. It's one fourth of my face."
Perhaps sensing her daughter's imminent tears, Mari patted her hand. "Darling, please don't dwell. You're beautiful, still beautiful. Lucas won't be able resist you. Don't you understand your power? You give him what he wants, what he needs most." She squeezed her hand, then picked up her cup again. "Most of the overseas girls looked at him and saw a big, strong, American. They wanted to serve him. They didn't realize all he wanted to do was be on his knees." She nibbled a corner of her pastry. "And you have him all to yourself for ten days?"
"Two weeks."

Camilla blushed. Mari was really too much. "Maman, please!" She tried to sound indignant, but she hoped her mother was right.
"I'm serious, Cam!" Mari extended a slim hand. "Ten thousand dollars says I'm right."
"Five thousand."
"Oh, pshaw, Camilla. Live a little. I know for a fact you make as much in interest in a week." Her mother's dark brown spiral curls bobbed as she nodded. "I raised a very smart woman."
Camilla flushed from the compliment and shook her mother's hand. "Ten thousand, then."
"All joking aside, darling." Her mother leaned forward. "He wouldn't come if he weren't interested."
Lifting her cup to her mouth, Camilla shrugged. "I hold the deed to his family's diner. Of course he's going to come."
Mari shook her head. "A man's pride is at stake. If he didn't wish to be in your service, he'd sell a limb." She tore off a small portion of her croissant and popped in into her mouth. "He's coming back for you."
"Oh, Maman." The threat of tears stung her eyes for the second time in an hour. "I wish I could be as sure as you are."
"Mark my words. He wants to come back." Mari eyed her daughter. "But you can't make it easy for him. I know how soft-hearted you are, Cammie. Make him earn it. On his knees."
